Construction Begins on Trianon Lofts, a Housing and Retail Project in Chicago's Woodlawn Community

CHICAGO, IL - Groundbreaking ceremonies held on Thursday, July 21 signal the start of construction on Trianon Lofts, 803 East 61st Street. The housing and retail project, with Joseph J. Duffy Co. as general contractor, is the first predominantly market rate rental housing to be built in Woodlawn in more than 50 years.

According to the developers, Preservation of Affordable Housing, the $12.5 million building with 24, two-bedroom/two-bath units and 7,000 square feet of commercial space demonstrates “the ongoing revitalization of Woodlawn and is the latest element of a strong, healthy community.” Each apartment will feature 900 to 950 square feet of living space, 10-foot high ceilings, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and an in-unit washer/dryer.

City of Chicago Deputy Mayor and Chief Neighborhood Development Director Andrea Zopp joined 20th Ward Alderman Willie Cochran, Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH) representatives Aaron Gornstein, President and CEO, and Bill Eager, vice president of POAH’s Chicago office; along with Joseph J. Duffy representatives at the groundbreaking. The project’s architect is Urban Works.

“This project represents another step toward a strong and healthy Woodlawn community and we are excited to be a contributor to it,” said Joseph Beuttas, vice president, business development for Joseph J. Duffy Co.

The building is named for the Trianon Ballroom, which was located nearby and demolished in 1967. This development is part of the City and POAH’s Choice Neighborhoods Partnership for the redevelopment of the former Grove Parc apartments.

Woodlawn is conveniently located between the University of Chicago and the end of the CTA’s Green Line. The neighborhood is minutes from the future home of the Obama Presidential Library.
